A massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake rocked the small, landlocked nation of Nepal on April 25, leaving more than 4,600 dead and 8 million affected in its wake. The center of the disaster was in the congested capital city of Kathmandu, which has an official population of 1 million and an unofficial population of 4.5 million.
At last count, hundreds are missing, more than 9,000 people are injured and 1 million children are in dire need of aid; this in addition to extensive damage to the city’s infrastructure, including shattered temples and the loss of the historic Dharahara Tower, which collapsed with people reportedly trapped inside.
